Rats vs mice
Rodents contaminate our food and transmit diseases. Before you call a professional, we would suggest you to find out whether you have rats or mice infestation.
Often time we receive call from a customer about having rats in their home. Upon our visit, we figure out, actually it is mice not rats. The whole purpose of this post is making it easy for our customers to easily identify whether they have mice or rats.
Rats are bigger in size:
Adult rats are substantially bigger, in both size and weight. The body length of a rat is typically nine to 11 inches, whereas a mouse’s body is just three or four inches. Rats are also over ten times heavier. A regular adult rat will weigh between a half and one pound, whereas a mouse is more like half an ounce.
Mice are smaller in size
House mice measure 12 to 20 cm in length, including the tail. It weighs 12 to 30 grams. They may be white, brown or grey in color. Their snouts are triangular and feature long whiskers. Mice have large, floppy ears and long, thin, hairy tails.
Rats are medium-sized to large rodents. However, rats may grow to be as long as 40 cm or more and weigh considerably more than mice. Their coats are white, gray, brown or black in color and are often soiled enough to leave grease marks on touched surfaces. The snout of the rat is blunter than that of the mouse. Rats have long tails that are commonly hairless and scaly.
Difference between their dropping size
You may have rats or mice if you found one or signs including rodents dropping. To determine whether you have mice or rats check for a few indications.
Mice droppings are small and smooth. Mice dropping are about 1/8 – 1/4 of an inch long with pointed ends. Rat droppings are bigger in size, about ½-inch to ¾-inch in length with blunt ends.
